Are our sink drains legal?

John Conlin / 17 November 2017

It's all down to the drainpipe destination apparently...

Two of the bedrooms in our recently purchased house have wash basins which we want to keep, but their drainpipes connect outside with pipes from the roof gutters.

Is this legal and healthy?

Some older parts of towns are served by ‘combined sewage’ systems that collect both domestic waste water and rainwater whilst newer public sewage systems exclude rain water which is dealt with by individual sub-ground soak-away pits.

Lift a manhole lid, run water in the kitchen sink and see if it is running in the manhole to check that it is leading to the public sewer then turn the bedroom basin taps on.

If there is still water running in the manhole you are connected to a ‘combined system’ and your basins are legal and healthy. If not the basin drain pipes should be re-routed.
