Dr Mark Porter answers a reader's query about mineral water.
Q: Is there any proven health advantage to drinking bottled mineral water rather than plain old tap water?
A: In a word, ‘no’ – at least not in an advanced country like the UK that has clean tap water. Most self-respecting independent experts now agree that tap water is just as healthy as mineral water. In fact, because tap water often contains lower salt levels, it may actually be better for some people. And it doesn’t come in nasty plastic bottles either.
So save money and the environment by sticking to the mains. By all means filter your water, but please don’t buy it ready-packed.
