This was an exclusive live event for Saga customers, recorded in November 2021. Experience it again below.

Origins and history

Our first conversation takes us on a journey through the origins and history of Historic Houses. Set against a post-war backdrop, we discuss the ‘country house problem’ raised in the Gower Report that led to the early pioneers of preservation.

We discover how Historic Houses became an independent organisation and dive into the V&A’s seminal ‘Destruction of the country house’ exhibition. Finally, we explore Historic Houses’ boom years supporting entrepreneurial ownership, to its present-day position championing extraordinary independent properties across the UK.

About Historic Houses

Nothing tells a nation’s story like its homes. Historic Houses is the country’s largest collection of historic houses and gardens, working on behalf of more than 1,000 important places. They represent, advise and support owners, helping these buildings stay alive and accessible for generations to come.
