Summerhouse
A reader would like to know how best to bring power to a summerhouse

Question

We have a summerhouse at the end of our garden and would like to have power for it, would solar panels be the answer or are there other solutions?

Answer

If you are just wanting a modest amount of light there several low voltage LED lights with rechargeable batteries that could be linked to small solar panels on the summerhouse roof. Alternatively, if you need heating or electronic gadgets mains power will be required.

You could have an electrician lay an armoured cable from the house to the summerhouse. Although these cables have a plastic outer covering they have a woven steel sheath inside protecting the current carrying wires and can be safely laid on or just below the surface of the ground. Connection with your house supply should always include an RCD switch or plug.
